Bank Nifty technical analysis: trend, levels and futures guide
Bank Nifty technical analysis in SuperCharting: index versus futures, trend and levels, VWAP, index weights, option chain and the NSE:BANKNIFTY technicals page.
Bank Nifty technical analysis is the study of the Nifty Bank index, symbol NSE:BANKNIFTY, using its price chart: trend, support and resistance, momentum and, on intraday charts, VWAP. It has one quirk that Nifty 50 does not: a handful of large banks drive most of its moves, and the index itself has no volume, so serious intraday work uses the futures chart. This guide shows how to set up both in SuperCharting and what to watch. It is educational, not a recommendation to buy or sell.
Index or futures: which chart for what
SuperCharting gives you three Bank Nifty charts, and each answers a different question.
| Symbol | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| NSE:BANKNIFTY | The index | Long history, trend, support and resistance, indicators on price |
| NSE:BANKNIFTY1! | Front-month futures, continuous | Volume, VWAP, volume profile, the futures premium |
| NSE:BANKNIFTY2! | Next-month futures, continuous | Seeing where traders position after the roll |
The index is a calculation, not a traded instrument, so its feed may carry no volume. VWAP then stops with "No volume is provided by the data vendor", and the volume profile has nothing to count. Put those on NSE:BANKNIFTY1!.
The continuous future rolls to the next month by itself at expiry, but it is not a back-adjusted series: its intraday history only covers the contract it points to now. A 200-bar average on a 15-minute BANKNIFTY1! chart may therefore be short of bars soon after a roll. For multi-month trend work, use the index. The NSE charts guide lists the symbols and exchange hours (09:15 to 15:30 IST).
Why the index weights matter
Bank Nifty holds only about a dozen banks, and the two biggest private banks, NSE:HDFCBANK and NSE:ICICIBANK, carry a large share of its weight. NSE:SBIN, NSE:AXISBANK and NSE:KOTAKBANK come next. So a 2% fall in one heavyweight can pull the index down even while most banks are flat. Before trusting a Bank Nifty breakout, check whether it is broad or carried by one or two names.
Two ways to check in SuperCharting:
- Open Products > Heatmaps and choose Nifty Bank. Each bank is a tile coloured by its change. Tile size follows market cap, which is close to but not the same as the index weight (the index uses free-float adjusted values), so treat it as a guide and read exact weights from NSE's published factsheet.
- Use a layout with NSE:BANKNIFTY next to NSE:HDFCBANK and NSE:ICICIBANK, with Interval synced and Symbol not synced, as described in multi-chart layouts.
Trend and levels
Read it the same top-down way as any index: weekly and daily charts for direction and major levels, then 15-minute or 5-minute charts for timing.
- Trend: higher highs and higher lows on the daily chart, price above its 50 and 200 averages. The moving averages guide covers setup.
- Levels: swing highs and lows, round numbers such as 50,000 or 55,000, and the previous day's high, low and close. The built-in Pivot points standard indicator draws pivot levels from the previous period; its Pivots timeframe is Auto by default.
- Volatility: the Average true range (Length 14, RMA smoothing by default) tells you how far the index normally moves in a bar. On a 15-minute chart an ATR of 120 points means a stop 30 points away is likely to be tagged by ordinary noise.
- Supertrend: ATR Length 10 and Factor 3 by default, as explained in the Supertrend guide; good for a trending day, noisy in a range.
Add India VIX (NSE:INDIAVIX) in a second chart. Rising volatility usually means wider swings in Bank Nifty and wider stops.
Intraday: VWAP and the opening range
On NSE:BANKNIFTY1! with the 5-minute interval, add Volume-weighted average price (see the VWAP guide). Price holding above VWAP shows buyers in control of the session so far; below it, sellers. Mark the high and low of the first 15 or 30 minutes with horizontal rays: a close beyond that range is a common reference for the day's direction. Neither tells you what happens next. The Nifty intraday chart setup builds a full four-chart screen for this.
Options and expiry
With NSE:BANKNIFTY on the chart, Products > Options opens its option chain by expiry and strike, and a click on a contract charts it. The chain is a chart picker: it does not show open interest or Greeks. On expiry days option positioning can pull the index around quickly, so check the exchange's current expiry calendar before you plan a trade. See the options chain guide.
The ready-made Bank Nifty technicals page
SuperCharting publishes /symbols/NSE-BANKNIFTY/technicals/. It shows Oscillators, Summary and Moving averages gauges for the daily timeframe, with the value and action of 11 oscillators and 15 moving averages. In the app, Products > Technicals offers the same ratings from 1 minute to 1 month. They summarise what indicators are saying and lag price; the technical analysis rating guide explains each row.

A worked example with made-up numbers
Suppose the daily index sits at 54,000, above a rising 50-day average at 53,200, with the swing high of 54,600 just above. The futures chart trades at 54,070, a premium of 70 points to the index, and holds above its VWAP at 54,010 at 10:30. ATR on the 15-minute chart is 120. A trader using this method might say the day favours buyers while VWAP holds, and size a stop in multiples of ATR rather than a fixed 30 points. If the futures lose VWAP and the heatmap shows HDFCBANK and ICICIBANK red, the reading changes. Past patterns do not guarantee future results, and the numbers above are invented.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Bank Nifty chart have volume?
The index does not. Use NSE:BANKNIFTY1! for volume, VWAP and volume profile.
What is the difference between BANKNIFTY and BANKNIFTY1!?
BANKNIFTY is the index. BANKNIFTY1! is the front-month futures contract, which trades at a premium or discount to the index and rolls to the next month after expiry.
Which timeframe is best for Bank Nifty?
5 and 15 minutes for intraday trades, 1 hour and 1 day for swing trades. Always read one higher timeframe first.
Is the technical rating a signal?
No. It summarises indicators on one timeframe and lags price. Use it as a quick check, not as an entry.
