Nifty intraday chart setup: a 4-chart layout with VWAP and Supertrend

A Nifty intraday chart setup in SuperCharting: four synced charts for NIFTY, BANKNIFTY and NIFTY1! with VWAP, Supertrend, EMAs, a template and alerts.

A practical Nifty intraday chart setup puts four charts on one screen: NSE:NIFTY on 5 and 15 minutes, NSE:BANKNIFTY on 5 minutes and the Nifty front-month future NSE:NIFTY1! on 5 minutes, with a few EMAs, Supertrend and session VWAP. This guide builds that screen in SuperCharting, which is currently free to use, and explains what each tool is for and where it falls short. For the symbols, data sources and exchange hours themselves, see NSE charts for Nifty and Bank Nifty.

Why four charts, and why these four

Each cell answers a different question during the session:

CellSymbol and intervalWhat it is for
Top leftNSE:NIFTY, 5 minutesThe main chart: structure, EMAs and Supertrend
Top rightNSE:NIFTY, 15 minutesThe higher-timeframe trend, so 5-minute flips are read in context
Bottom leftNSE:BANKNIFTY, 5 minutesWhether the heaviest sector agrees with the index
Bottom rightNSE:NIFTY1!, 5 minutesSession VWAP and volume, which the index cannot give you

The last cell matters more than it looks. VWAP needs volume, and an index is not traded itself, so its feed may carry no volume. When that happens the VWAP script stops with "No volume is provided by the data vendor." NSE:NIFTY1! is the nearest futures contract and does carry traded volume, so its VWAP is meaningful. NIFTY1! rolls to the next contract by itself at expiry, but it is not a back-adjusted series, so its intraday history only covers the current contract.

For a volatility read, swap the 15-minute Nifty for India VIX, NSE:INDIAVIX, or pick a larger grid; layouts go up to 16 charts.

The tools on the charts, and their limits

EMAs

Two exponential moving averages, 9 and 21, on each 5-minute chart, and a 50 EMA on the 15-minute chart. The fast pair shows short-term direction; the 50 on 15 minutes is a slower filter. The built-in Exponential moving average starts at length 9, so you add it twice and change the second one to 21. Averages lag by design: they confirm a move after it has started and whipsaw in a sideways session.

Supertrend

The built-in Supertrend uses ATR Length 10 and Factor 3. Green under price means the trend is up, red over price means down, and it flips only on a close. On a 5-minute chart that keeps you on one side of a move, but in a tight range it flips back and forth. The 15-minute Supertrend is the usual filter for this. More detail is in the Supertrend guide.

Session VWAP

Volume-weighted average price with the default Session anchor resets at the 09:15 open each day. Above it, buyers have paid up on average today; below it, sellers are in control. Early in the session the line moves a lot because few bars make up the average. The VWAP guide covers the bands and anchors.

Session handling

SuperCharting uses Indian Standard Time for NSE: 09:15 to 15:30, Monday to Friday. Live candles are built only inside those hours. Right-click the time axis and tick Session breaks to draw a dashed line at each 09:15 open on intraday charts, so yesterday's last bars are not mistaken for today's. The market status follows clock hours only; exchange holidays and special sessions are not marked.

None of these tools gives a buy or sell signal by itself. They describe trend, average price and volatility, and the decision stays with you.

How to set up a Nifty intraday chart in SuperCharting

  1. Click Layout setup (the grid icon in the top toolbar) and pick the 4-chart grid with four equal cells.
  2. Under SYNC IN LAYOUT, leave Symbol and Interval off, so each cell keeps its own symbol and interval, and leave Crosshair on. The card also lists Time and Date range; at present only Symbol, Interval and Crosshair move the other charts.
  3. Click the top-left chart, press Ctrl + K, type nifty and choose NIFTY on NSE. Set 5 minutes from the interval button. Repeat for the other cells: NSE:NIFTY on 15 minutes, NSE:BANKNIFTY on 5 minutes, NSE:NIFTY1! on 5 minutes.
  4. On the top-left chart click Indicators, search "ema" and add Exponential moving average twice; open the second one's Settings and set Length to 21. Then search "supertrend" and add Supertrend.
  5. With that chart active, click Indicator templates (right of Indicators), choose Save indicator template…, name it "Nifty 5m trend", tick Remember Interval, and click Save.
  6. Click the BANKNIFTY chart, open Indicator templates > Open template…, and pick "Nifty 5m trend" on My templates. Do the same on the NIFTY1! chart, then add Volume-weighted average price there.
  7. On the 15-minute chart add Exponential moving average with Length 50 and Supertrend.
  8. Right-click the time axis on each intraday chart and tick Session breaks.
  9. Open Manage layouts (the arrow next to the layout name), choose Rename…, call it "Nifty intraday", then Save layout (Ctrl + S).

Two template rules to know. A template applies only to the active chart, and it replaces that chart's indicators, so apply it before adding anything extra. With Remember Interval ticked, applying it also switches the chart to 5 minutes. See indicator templates.

Alerts on the setup

An alert runs on the interval of the chart you create it from, so make the 5-minute flip alert on a 5-minute chart. Indicator alerts use the script's default inputs (ATR Length 10, Factor 3). Alerts are not tied to session hours, but no new candles are built outside 09:15 to 15:30, so nothing triggers after the close. The price alerts guide covers expiry and notifications.

A worked example

Suppose at 10:05 the 5-minute NSE:NIFTY chart closes a bar at 24,812, above its 9 and 21 EMAs, and the 5-minute Supertrend has just turned green. Before reading anything into it, glance across the screen:

Three of four cells disagree with the 5-minute flip. A trader using this layout would treat that flip as weak information on its own and wait to see whether the 15-minute chart and VWAP line up. With Crosshair sync on, hovering the flip bar shows the same moment on all four charts. The numbers here are illustrative, the readings are educational rather than a trading call, and past results do not guarantee future results.

Frequently asked questions

Why does VWAP not work on NSE:NIFTY?

VWAP needs traded volume, and an index may come with none. Put VWAP on NSE:NIFTY1! or a liquid stock such as NSE:RELIANCE instead.

Can I use one template for all four charts?

Yes, one chart at a time: click a chart, then Open template…. Applying it replaces that chart's indicators, and Remember Interval also changes its interval.

Will my layout be there tomorrow?

Yes. Layouts are saved to your account and Autosave is on by default, so the grid, symbols, indicators and sync switches come back when you sign in, on any device. See multi-chart layouts.

Does the chart know about NSE holidays?

No. The status and session breaks follow regular clock hours. On a holiday no quotes arrive, so the chart simply does not change.
