Price alerts: get notified when a market reaches your price level
How price alerts work in SuperCharting: crossing, greater or less than and moving % conditions, triggers, expiry, notifications and account limits.
A price alert in SuperCharting watches one symbol and tells you when its price does what you asked: crosses a level, moves above or below it, or moves by a percentage. Alerts are checked on the SuperCharting server on every incoming quote, so they keep working after you close the browser tab, and they can notify you with an on-screen toast, a sound, a webhook or a Telegram message.
Where to create a price alert
There are several ways into the same Create alert dialog:
- The Alert button in the header at the top of the chart (or press Alt + A).
- Right-click the chart and choose Add alert on NIFTY at 24,850.00…. The price under your cursor becomes the alert value, which is the quickest way to set a level.
- Right-click a drawing such as a horizontal line and choose Add alert on horizontal line…. The alert takes the price of the drawing's last point. It is a fixed price alert: it does not follow a sloping trend line.
- In the Alerts panel on the right-hand widget bar, press the + button (Create Alert).
The dialog always opens for the symbol and timeframe of the active chart. To set alerts on many symbols at once, see watchlist alerts.
How to set a price alert in SuperCharting
- Open the chart you want, for example NSE:RELIANCE on the 15-minute timeframe.
- Right-click near the level you care about, say 2,950, and choose Add alert on RELIANCE at 2,950.00….
- In Condition, leave the source on Price and pick the operator, for example Crossing Up.
- Check the Value box. Type an exact number or use the small up and down arrows to step by one tick.
- Open Trigger and choose how often the alert may fire (see below).
- Open Expiration and pick 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 2 months or Open-ended. New alerts default to one month.
- Optionally open Message to give the alert a name and your own text, and Notifications to choose toast, sound, webhook or Telegram.
- Press Create. A toast confirms "Alert created" and the alert appears in the Alerts panel.
The seven price conditions
| Condition | Fires when |
|---|---|
| Crossing | the price passes through the value in either direction |
| Crossing Up | the price moves from below the value to at or above it |
| Crossing Down | the price moves from above the value to at or below it |
| Greater Than | the price goes above the value after being at or below it |
| Less Than | the price goes below the value after being at or above it |
| Moving Up % | the price has risen by at least the value, in percent, from its reference price |
| Moving Down % | the price has fallen by at least the value, in percent, from its reference price |
Every condition compares one quote with the one before it, so an alert needs at least two quotes after it is created before it can fire. Greater Than and Less Than fire on the move into the zone, not again on every quote while the price stays there.
For the two percentage conditions the reference is the first price the alert sees. After each hit the reference resets to the price at that moment. So an alert on XAUUSD with Moving Up % and a value of 1 fires once gold is 1% above where it was when you created the alert, and with the trigger set to Every time it would then wait for another 1% rise from that new price.
Triggers and expiration
The Trigger row decides how often one alert may notify you:
- Once only: fires the first time and then stops. The alert stays in the list, marked stopped, so you can restart it.
- Once per bar: at most one notification per bar of the chart's timeframe. On a 1-hour chart that is at most once an hour.
- Once per bar close: for script conditions it reads the last closed bar. A plain price alert is checked on each quote, so for price this behaves like once per bar.
- Every time: fires on every qualifying quote.
There is also a safety rule: an alert that triggers more than 15 times in 3 minutes is stopped automatically and a line saying so is written to the log. This protects you from a flood of messages when a level sits right on the current price.
Expiration switches the alert off at the chosen date and time. Expired alerts stay in the list as stopped and the log records "expired".
Notifications and the message
The Message row holds the alert name and the text sent when it fires. By default the text describes the condition, such as "RELIANCE Crossing Up 2950.00". You can type your own text of up to 2,000 characters, and placeholders such as {{ticker}}, {{exchange}}, {{interval}}, {{close}} and {{timenow}} are replaced when the alert fires.
The Notifications row offers:
- Show toast notification: a card in the bottom-right corner of any open SuperCharting tab.
- Play sound: a short tone with the toast.
- Webhook URL: an https address that receives the message. See webhook alerts.
- Telegram: send the message, optionally with a chart picture, to a chat of your own bot. See Telegram alerts.
Every alert that fires is also added to the Notifications panel (the bell on the widget bar), so you can see what happened while you were away.
The Alert presets button at the top of the dialog saves up to five presets: the condition, trigger and expiry, name and message, and notification choices. The price value and webhook address are not stored in a preset.
Managing alerts: the Alerts panel and the Log
Open the Alerts panel from the right-hand widget bar. The Alerts tab lists every alert with a green dot when active, the symbol, its name, the condition, the trigger and how many times it has fired. Use the search and sort buttons to find one. Right-click or double-click an alert for Stop, Restart or Remove. The Options menu has Stop all, Restart all inactive and Remove all.
An alert cannot be edited after it is created: remove it and create a new one with the changes.
The Log tab lists the last 200 events, newest first: alerts that fired, expiries, automatic stops and failed webhook deliveries. Clear log empties it.
Limits
Each account can keep up to 1,000 price alerts and, separately, 1,000 technical alerts (script, strategy and multi-condition alerts). An alert covers one symbol: alerts on a formula chart such as a spread are not available yet, so set the alert on one of its symbols. Alerts fire on live quotes only, so a market that is closed, or a feed that is not sending quotes, cannot trigger them. Alerts do not fire on bars you replay with Bar Replay.
Frequently asked questions
Do price alerts work when my browser is closed?
Yes. Alerts are checked on the SuperCharting server as quotes arrive. Toasts and sounds need an open tab, but webhook and Telegram notifications are sent either way, and fired alerts appear in the Notifications panel next time you sign in.
Why did my Crossing alert not fire straight away?
An alert needs a quote before and after the level. If the market is closed or the feed is quiet, nothing is compared until new quotes arrive. Check the market status on the chart legend.
Can I change the level of an existing alert?
Not in place. Remove the alert from the Alerts panel and create a new one at the new level.
What happens after a Once only alert fires?
It is marked stopped and stays in the list. Use Restart to arm it again.
How many alerts can I have?
Up to 1,000 price alerts and 1,000 technical alerts per account. Watchlist alerts create one alert per symbol, which count towards those totals, and you can keep up to 15 watchlist alerts.
