Indicator templates: save and apply indicator sets in one click
How indicator templates work in SuperCharting: saving your own indicator sets, Remember Symbol and Interval, and TradingView's six technical templates.
An indicator template is a saved set of indicators, with their inputs and colours, that you can apply to any chart in one click. SuperCharting keeps your own templates in your account and also ships TradingView's six technical templates, such as Oscillators and MA Exp Ribbon. Both are reached from the Indicator templates button next to Indicators at the top of the chart.
What a template stores
When you save a template, SuperCharting records:
- Every indicator on the active chart, except compared symbols, with its inputs, style overrides (colours, widths, hidden plots) and visibility settings.
- Strategy Properties if a strategy is part of the set.
- Optionally, the symbol (Remember Symbol) and the interval (Remember Interval).
- The list of indicator names, which the templates dialog shows under the template's name.
Drawings and chart colours are not part of an indicator template. Chart colours can be saved separately as a chart template from the chart's right-click menu.
Templates are saved with your account, so a template made on a desktop browser is there on your phone too.
How to save an indicator template in SuperCharting
- Set up a chart the way you like it. For example, on NSE:NIFTY 15m add a 20 EMA, a 50 EMA, VWAP and RSI 14 with 80 and 20 bands.
- Click the Indicator templates button (to the right of Indicators) and choose Save indicator template….
- Type a name under TEMPLATE NAME, for example "Intraday trend". The chevron at the end of the field lists your existing names, in case you want to overwrite one.
- Tick Remember Symbol if applying the template should also switch to this symbol. Tick Remember Interval to switch to 15m as well. Hover the info icon next to each for a reminder of what it does.
- Check the SAVED INDICATORS list at the bottom, then click Save. The Save button stays greyed out until you type a name.
Saving under a name that already exists replaces that template.
How to apply a template
- Click the chart you want to change. In a multi-chart layout, the template applies to the active chart only.
- Click Indicator templates and choose Open template….
- Pick a tab: My templates, Technicals or Financials. Use Search to filter by template name or by the indicators it contains.
- Click a row.
Applying a template replaces the chart's indicators. Every indicator on that chart is removed first, then the template's indicators are added. Compared symbols stay. If the template remembers a symbol or interval, the chart switches to them.
To delete one of your templates, hover its row in My templates and click the trash icon on the right.
Combined with multi-chart layouts, templates let you dress several charts the same way quickly. Click each chart and apply the same template.
TradingView's six technical templates
The Technicals tab holds the six templates TradingView publishes, with its own inputs and colours. Applying one adds SuperCharting's built-in versions of those indicators at those settings:
| Template | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Bill Williams' 3 Lines | Volume plus three SMAs: 13 shifted 8 bars, 8 shifted 5, 5 shifted 3 |
| Displaced EMA | Volume plus a 20 EMA shifted 5 bars |
| MA Exp Ribbon | Volume plus eight EMAs: 55, 50, 45, 40, 35, 30, 25 and 20 |
| Oscillators | Volume, Stochastic RSI (3, 3, 14, 14), RSI 14 and CCI 20 |
| Swing Trading | Volume, Pivot points high low (10, 10), Pivot points standard and Zigzag (5% deviation, depth 10) |
| Volume Based | Volume, CCI 20, On-balance volume, Rate of change 9 and Chaikin money flow 3 |
They are useful starting points. For example, apply MA Exp Ribbon to XAUUSD 1h to see trend strength from how far the ribbon fans out. Then change any input and save the result as your own template. More about the averages is in moving averages, and about RSI in the RSI guide.
The Financials tab
The Financials tab lists TradingView's fundamental templates, such as Valuation, Margins, Dividends, Debt and solvency, and Revenue and EPS growth. They need company financial data series that SuperCharting's chart feeds do not provide. Clicking one shows a message saying so and nothing is added. For company ratios and results on Indian stocks, see Indian stocks fundamentals.
Tips for good templates
- Keep templates small and focused, such as "Trend", "Momentum" or "Volume". Applying one replaces everything, so one large template is harder to adjust than several small ones.
- Use Remember Interval for timeframe-specific sets. An intraday set with session VWAP makes little sense on a weekly chart.
- Linked indicators come along. If an EMA reads RSI's plot as its source (indicators on indicators), saving both in one template keeps the pair together.
- Name the settings, for example "RSI 9 80-20 + EMA 21". You will thank yourself later.
Frequently asked questions
Does applying a template remove my drawings?
No. Templates only touch indicators, and the symbol and interval if you chose to remember them. Drawings stay on the chart.
Can I add a template's indicators without removing mine?
Not at the moment. Applying a template replaces the indicators on that chart. Add the extra indicators afterwards, then save the combination as a new template.
Why did a Technicals template change my indicator colours?
The technical templates carry TradingView's colours and line widths, for example the blue shades of Bill Williams' 3 Lines. Change them in each indicator's Style tab and save your own copy.
How many templates can I save?
The code sets no separate limit on the number of templates. Each chart still carries at most 50 indicators.
